About the book

Structural equation modelling has become a standard tool in the social and behavioural sciences, and Mplus has become one of the standard programmes for it. What is usually missing is the step in between: a text that takes readers from their first input file to a multigroup model on panel data without assuming they already know the answer.

This textbook is written for that step. It introduces the logic of structural equation models and the syntax of Mplus side by side, so that every model class is met twice — once as a statistical idea and once as code that runs. The examples are not toy data: they are drawn from published empirical work and reproduced with commented syntax, which means readers can see what an analysis looks like when it has to survive review.

The book suits both newcomers and readers who already work with Mplus and want to move into more demanding model classes.

Chapters

  1. Mplus — eine Übersicht (an overview of the programme)
  2. Explorative Faktorenanalyse und Konfirmatorische Faktorenanalyse (exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis)
  3. Strukturgleichungsmodelle (structural equation models)
  4. Multiple Gruppenvergleiche (multigroup comparisons)
  5. Strukturgleichungsmodelle für Paneldaten (models for panel data)
  6. Mehrebenenanalysen (multilevel analysis)

Companion material

Every analysis in the book can be rerun. The companion repository holds one folder per chapter with the Mplus input files, the data sets they read, and the output the book reports — so a model can be read as syntax, executed, and compared against the result in print.

Reviews

The book covers an impressive range, from an elementary introduction to Mplus through to the analysis of very complex models. […] The many examples of Mplus syntax for different model classes are especially helpful.
